RA and the Dentist’s Chair

So, I need quite a bit of dental work. Shame on me for not taking better care of my teeth. I have gone years without seeing a dentist, and now I regret it. I’ve already had a cavity filled, and Tuesday I had the first part of a 3 part root canal done. Now, how does this relate to having RA? Well, even after having an oral surgeon rip the nerves of my tooth out, I still did not feel the pain of the procedure. I did (and still do), however, have a horrible pain in my jaw. I haven’t been able to open my mouth very wide or take large bits of food without wincing in pain. This happened when I got the cavity filled as well.

Maybe I’m wrong, but I believe that my RA is a contributing factor to the jaw pain. Both the dentist and the oral surgeon had to keep asking me to open my mouth wider. The pain in my jaw was worse than the pain from the procedures being done. I would try to give my jaw a rest as the dentist switched tools, but even that wasn’t very helpful. So, does anyone out there have some advice as to what I can do to help the discomfort? I still have one more visit with the oral surgeon to complete the root canal, and one more visit with my regular dentist to put a cap on my tooth. Leave me some comments!
